ABOUT
Edie Lawrence is a versatile artist and director based in Bristol, UK. After studying Animation at the Royal College of Art, specializing in stop motion, Edie began crafting intricate miniature worlds that have since evolved into large-scale sets and props for a wide range of music videos, theatrical productions, and editorial collaborations.
Her personal work draws profound inspiration from the natural world, which has led to descriptions of her creations as darkly captivating, often grotesque, and sometimes unsettling. These elements reflect her unique ability to explore the more bizarre and macabre aspects of life through art.
Last year, Lawrence finished her first short claymation film ‘Autophagy’, which is currently screening at various film festival premieres universally. It’s due for release later this year.
Autophagy Synopsis
An epidemic transmitted by water turns a city’s inhabitants into octopi. A couple is faced with a dilemma: buy a treatment and keep living in difficult times or drink the water and face the growing hostility of those that survived.

In classic claymation style, the fun is how the malleability of the form leads to a jawdropping, often grisly transformation. That is certainly the case here, as a claymation version of IDLES' vocalist Joe Talbot hits the road on his chopper motorbike, riding down a Route 66-style highway.
It's not long before the transformation begins, as he ventures further into the unknown. The flesh is slowly being stripped away from his body...
Exploring the lyrical themes of addiction and having to face your demons head-on, the video is a brilliant achievement. Not for the faint of heart, maybe, but it is IDLES after all. LOOSE and animator Edie Lawrence, supplemented by VFX wizard Jordan Chappell, echo the work of the real masters of the artform, and it's very good to see claymation having a moment once again.’

The video for Smoke Hole begins with Archie and Josh - aka SND - driving along country roads in their stretch limo to Shimewaza - a festival in their honour, populated by masses of devoted, unquestioning followers. And Lawrence has done a remarkable job in creating the festival vibe that you badly missed last summer - the hippies, the merch, the fairground attractions... and as night falls, a banging set by the SND boys to a crowd of thousands.
This oddball dark comedy is a parallel reflection of the current state of the world - all achieved with plasticine animation, cardboard sets and greenscreen footage. Lawrence joins that small group of claymation animators who have made a memorable impact in music videos down the decades. She's a talent to watch for 2021.’
